I got to meet him (sort of) at Gen Con a few years ago. Ok, "meet him" is a mis-characterization of what actually happened... I was in a crowded ball room (probably 4 ball rooms with the partitions removed) containing several thousand fans. It was packed and loud. Wizards was making their first announcement that 4th Edition D&D was about to be released. They were giving away flash drives with the D&D logo and cool t-shirts with a beholder on the back (I just wore that shirt 2 days ago!) There was a huge "life-size" troll made of some styrofoam substance and a similar beholder and people were all over those things taking pictures and what-not. It was a few minutes before "show time" and I was up front with a few friends sitting on the floor. Toby Maheras, a wizards guy, came up to me and my friends. He was pushing a man in a wheel chair. He said to me, "Dave, can you make some room here for Dave Arneson?" I was blown away!! I said, "Heck yeah! In fact, I will lay down and you can park his wheel chair on top of me, if need be!" Toby laughed and said it would not be necessary. Moments later the show started. I never actually go to speak to him, but I was about two feet away from him when they made the announcement...my brush with greatness. A great man! I am saddened to hear of his passing... --Hightower
