Rules Interactions: Hive Tyrand & Tyrant Guard

SO YOU CAN IGNORE THIS FAIL OF A BLOG POST!

as pointed out by eriochrome, i failed to read the rules again and this does not apply in this edition.

Ok, so there are many questions about the Shieldwall rule.

In it's entirety:

"Shieldwall: The Tyrant Guard are used as living shields whose entire purpose is to protect the Hive Tyrants from harm, heedless of any personal injury.

A single Hive Tyrant (Including the Swarmlord) may join a unit of Tyrant Guard exactly as if it were an independant character. If a Hive Tyrant (or the Swarmlord) has joined a Tyrant Guard unit, the unit can not go to ground, Voluntarily or otherwise."

Wow, Great! just like the last book right? Wrong.

Unfortunately, GW kind of screwed the pooch on this one. Their intention was VERY clear. Make it so you can not pick the Hive Tyrant out during the shooting phase. Unfortunately, their wording sucks and you still can. He joins as if he were an Independant Character, this does not negate his Monsterous Creature status. Expect an FAQ on this horribly written rule. It will likely read:

"Shieldwall: The Tyrant Guard are used as living shields whose entire purpose is to protect the Hive Tyrants from harm, heedless of any personal injury.

A single Hive Tyrant (Including the Swarmlord) may join a unit of Tyrant Guard exactly as if it were an independant character. While a Hive Tyrant is joined to a Tyrant Guard Unit, he may not be singled out during the shooting phase as he normally would be because of his monsterous creature type. If a Hive Tyrant (or the Swarmlord) has joined a Tyrant Guard unit, the unit can not go to ground, Voluntarily or otherwise."

One sentence makes a world of difference.

  1. Actually you are missing the point of the rules questions here. There is no longer a rule that allows monstrous creatures in units to be targeted individually. That was a 4th ed rule that is not in the 5th book.

The question is really? Can the Tyrant be targeted in close combat as he is not a IC only able to join the unit. Also can he leave the unit since the rule only says join. If he cannot leave does that make the unit a retinue according to the rulebook and make him count as an upgrade character.

  3. This codex just has so many questions which are on the grey area like the Doom Leech on units in vehicles. People are constantly spreading good affects out from units in vehicles that maybe they should sometimes get the bad affects back. You can infer some intent from older codex versions but give all the changes maybe this or that is intentional.

People have described it as a good first draft that must have gotten pushed out the door without enough reading and checking of rules and points costs.

  4. I agree that a bit more proof-reading and forethought could have gone into this book, a few point changes would have been nice, but in the end I don't set those.
