New Nids List Revamp

So, at my tournament this weekend and seeing how 2 different Tyranid Lists performed, I've decided my list needs a re-vamp.

My original List was this:

Tyranid Prime with Bonesword, Lash whip and Devourer - 95 Points

3 Hive Guard - 150 Points

Doom of Malan'Tai- 90 Points

Termagaunts x10 - 50 Points

Termagaunts x10 - 50 Points

Tervigon - Catalyst, Cluster Spines - 175 Points

Tervigon - Catalyst, Cluster Spines - 175 Points

Harpy - Regenerate, Twin Linked Heavy Venom Cannon, Cluster Spines - 185 Points

Harpy - Regenerate, Twin Linked Heavy Venom Cannon, Cluster Spines - 185 Points

Tyranofex - Rupture Cannon, Regenerate, Dessicator Larvae - 295 Points

Seeing that the Tyranofex performed.... less oppertounely than expected and that the Tyranid prime was..... basically a "Cheap" choice, I've decided that my list needs a bit of a change.... SOooo...

Hive Tyrant - Lash Whip, Bone Sword, Scything Tallons, Thorax Swarm - Dessicator Larve - 195
2 Tyrant Guard - 120

3 Hive Guard - 150 Points

2 Zoanthropes - 120

Doom of Malan'Tai- 90 Points

Termagaunts x10 - 50 Points

Termagaunts x10 - 50 Points

Tervigon - Catalyst, Cluster Spines - 175 Points

Tervigon - Catalyst, Cluster Spines - 175 Points

Harpy - Regenerate, Twin Linked Heavy Venom Cannon, Cluster Spines - 185 Points

Harpy - Regenerate, Twin Linked Heavy Venom Cannon, Cluster Spines - 185 Points

This gives me better and more reliable fire power (in the Zoanthropes) as well as the same number of Monsterous Creatures in the army. I'm still quite satisfied with this setup and don't think that the changes will cause any problems for the army.

Thoughts?

  1. Tyrannofex not working out. Well at least you gave it a try compared to many of us who just eliminated it straight away.

  2. I feel that Doom need a Mycetic Spore. Giving Tervigon toxin sacs is almost a must. It gives the Termagants so much bite it's no joke.
All the best in your coming Tourney.

  3. The changes you made were spot on: The 'fex just can't match the damage output of zoanthropes and a Hive Tyrant. The only thing I'd consider changing there, is his lack of a VC. Granted, you already have four reasonable sources of Anti-mech in your army, but if you're planning to face many tanks, a 5th would be nice.

Best of luck in the tourney! Do let me know how the harpies fair!

  4. The harpies have done amazingly at what I wanted them to do, which surprisingly is not what they say to use them for in the codex. they tie up just about any non dedicated CC troops units indefinitely. Amazingly useful for keeping that 10 man tactical squad from getting near an objective. also very useful for that needed added shot to a vehicle. I'm also thinking that since I have 2 Harpies with HVC, and 2 Zoey's, I can drop one of the 3 Hive guard for a unit of 2 and add adrenal glands and Toxin Sacs to both of the Tervigons. That leaves me at 1485 points taken up. I can add a few more upgrades, but still keeps the core intact and useful.

    Thoughts on this?

  5. Contrary to popular opinion, I'm not a fan of upgrades on Tervigons. With their ability to grant FNP to nearby friendly targets, and their seemingly unending supply of crappers, they already have a big enough target on top of them. When you put them near several squads of gaunts trying to leverage their ability to extend such abilities to gaunts, their real weakness is illuminated: Kill the Tervigon, and most of the 'gaunts die as well.

Since they're already such juicy targets, I prefer not to give my opponents another reason to shoot them. Because of this, when they poop out a unit, I have that unit immediately run out of 6" from the Tervigon (and/or have the Tervigon move away as well). The way I see it, Tervigons are a liability to nearby gaunts, not a means of enhancement--especially when I have to pay extra points for a chance to enhance them... ya know?

If you have points to play with, putting the Doom in a spore (as Grimcon stated) is a pretty solid tactic. I just posted a batrep of a game where I did that, and it was hugely successful. Feel free to take a look if you'd like.
